On Manufactured Ground

Insects clinging to glass, concrete walls, and metal fences — surfaces that belong to no ecosystem, they evolved within. Insects are attuned to the textures of plants and bark; I wonder whether they register the difference, whether something in the body knows this is not natural ground.

And if they do know, why do they remain? Is it that the built environment leaves them no choice, or have they begun to read these surfaces on their own terms, using what the city offers to navigate, to orient, to survive?
